Chapter History

Storied History of the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter

A Permanent Brotherhood Is Established

The Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. was founded in 1974 with a clear and lasting purpose: to establish a permanent brotherhood of college-educated men committed to service, leadership, achievement, and community uplift throughout Southern Colorado.

Expanding the Bond Beyond Denver

At a time when the fraternity’s presence in Colorado was largely centered around the Denver metropolitan area, the creation of the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter marked an important expansion of Kappa Alpha Psi’s reach into the southern region of the state.

Foundational Leadership

Upon the chapter’s inception in 1974, Brother Walter Smith was elected as the first Polemarch, serving from 1974 to 1975. He was succeeded by Brother Burnie Legette, whose multiple terms as Polemarch made him one of the monumental figures in the chapter’s foundational history.

A Visible Force for Service

From its earliest years, the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter stood for more than fraternity presence. It became a visible force for mentorship, education, service, and civic engagement.

Guide Right and the Work of Mentorship

For more than five decades, the chapter has carried forward the national objectives of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. through local action, including Guide Right and Kappa League.

Scholarship as Legacy

Through the Burnie Legette Foundation Scholarship, the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter continues to support graduating high school seniors pursuing higher education.

Carrying the Bond Forward Today

Today, the Colorado Springs Alumni Chapter remains affiliated with the Middle Western Province of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and continues to build upon the foundation laid by its chartering members.

As a chartering member and the only surviving chartering member, his presence represents the chapter’s foundation, perseverance, brotherhood, and enduring commitment to Achievement.

Brother Taylor was initiated into Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. on May 1, 1965, through the Alpha Nu Chapter at North Carolina A&T State University.

Through Brother Taylor, the chapter remains directly connected to its beginning. His legacy continues to inspire brothers to serve with dignity, lead with purpose, strengthen the Bond, and carry forward the vision established by the chartering members in 1974.
